Lyndhurst man arrested on child sexual assault charges

HACKENSACK –John L. Molinelli arrested of the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office announced on Sept. 16 that John Marion, 31, of 206 Lafayette Ave., Lyndhurst was arrested on charges of one count each of sexual assault (a 2nd degree crime,) criminal sexual contact (4th degree,) and endangering the welfare of a child (3rd degree.) The Sept.15 arrest occurred at 7 p.m. at the Prosecutor’s Office in Hackensack and came about as a result of an investigation conducted by members of the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office, Sex Crimes and Child Abuse Squad, under the direction of Chief Joseph Macellaro and the Lyndhurst Police Department, under the direction of Chief James O’Connor.
Marion was supposed to be working at Simplex Sprinkler in Rockaway, according to the press release.
Marion was arrested after the collaborative investigation of the above agencies revealed that between July 2009 and August 2009, the suspect sexually assaulted the victim, who is under the age of 16. The sexual assault occurred in the Township of Lyndhurst.
Bail was set for Marion at $100,000 with no 10 percent option by the Honorable Peter Melchionne, J.S.C. As a condition of bail, the alleged predator is to have no contact with the victim and surrender his passport. The suspect was remanded to the Bergen County Jail in lieu of bail.
Honorable George Savino, J.M.C. for Sept. 22 at 9:30 a.m., set the arraignment date police reports said.
Prosecutor Molinelli states that the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt and would like to thank the Lyndhurst Police Department for their assistance and cooperation in the investigation.

Bergen SWAN Hosts Nature Walk

We tend to take them for granted, but our local woodlands are essential refueling spots for migrant birds on their annual treks southward. On Sunday, October 19, at 10 a.m., Bergen Save the Watershed Action Network (Bergen SWAN) will be sponsoring a free guided walk through one of these vital suburban forests, the 20-acre Emerson Woods Preserve. Join Bergen County Audubon Society naturalist and bird expert Ken Witkowski, who will show you how to spot and identify some of the many southbound species – such as song and fox sparrows, kinglets, warblers and hermit thrush – and the various seeds, nuts and berries on which they depend for survival.

Ken Witkowski has served on the Board of Directors for the Bergen County Audubon Society since 1989 and is currently in his third term as President. He also leads field trips for the New Jersey Audubon Society as an Associate Naturalist. Now living in Sussex County, he is very involved with the Friends of the Wallkill River National Wildlife Refuge, currently serving as its Vice President. From 2004 to 2006, working for New Jersey Audubon and the New Jersey Meadowlands Commission, Ken conducted year-round bird surveys in the Meadowlands, designed to document the abundance and distribution of birds found there.

Regional Medical Center Hosting Food Drive

In response to a reported shortage at local food collection centers and after a successful summer drive, Bergen Regional Medical Center (BRMC) is again collecting food items to help the hungry in the area.
Donations will benefit the Center for Food Action, the Englewood-based group that provides more than 40,000 7-day emergency food packages for neighbors in need from 90 towns throughout Bergen County and upper Passaic Valley.
“As a community-minded hospital,” BRMC President Heather Aaron said, “Bergen Regional is proud to host this food drive, and we urge members of our community to join our efforts and bring requested food items to our facility so that we can deliver them to the Center for Food Action.”
Food collection at BRMC will take place between October 1 and October 31 at a marked box in front of the hospital’s main entrance. Needed items include: low sugar cereal; peanut butter and jelly; canned meat and tuna; macaroni and cheese; canned fruit and vegetables; spaghetti sauce; 100% juice; diapers; infant formula and baby food; Ensure, and dental hygiene products.
This summer, BRMC collected more than 50 bags of food for the Center for Food Action. For the fall drive, the medical center is hoping to double that total.
