There was a two-car crash at the intersection of Elm Street and Seeley Avenue in Kearny on Jan.28 at 8:12 Monday morning. A green 2005 Honda Odyssey was heading north on Elm Street when a 2004 silver Mitsubishi traveling east on Stuyvesant Avenue failed to see the stop sign. The Mitsubishi hit the Honda. Upon impact the Honda was propelled into Dollar Sub deli to the northeast. The Mitsubishi barreled onto the sidewalk across the street knocking over a mailbox, according to traffic police reports. Luckily, both drivers’ airbags worked properly and they were taken to University Hospital in Newark with minor injuries.
As for the deli, the Kearny Building Department deemed it structurally sound suffering damage to the windows and interior of the store.
Officer Peter Blair said the four-way stop intersection has had three crashes in the last year. The Town engineer, Mike Neglia, had placed traffic monitors at the area but it did not meet the required amount for the state to put in traffic lights, Blair said. Currently, stop signs with flashing LED are being considered.
“It’s a straight run from Stuyvesant to Elm, and people have a tendency not to realize the stop sign is there,” he said. “It’s a good thing there were no students around, as they come and go at that time, and no pedestrians were hurt.”
