Letter from Superintendent Mooney about Halloween gang threat

Dear Parent/Guardian:

As you may know students in many towns, including Kearny, are receiving text messages and emails indicating that there are gang-related initiation activities which may endanger our students and citizens. According to the text messages, girls and women appear to be the target. However, everyone should be on high alert.
The time frame for these threats is today, Oct. 30 and tomorrow, Friday Oct. 31. As a result of our concern, all outside activities including lunch and physical education have been moved indoors. The traditional school parades scheduled in the elementary schools for tomorrow will be conducted indoors. All athletic competitions have been cancelled, and practices will be conducted indoors with police supervision.
Students at all schools will be held indoors during lunch. If you have not previously ordered lunch, please send lunch with your child tomorrow. Our cafeteria staff will have pizza, boxed lunches and drinks available for purchase.
Kearny Police Department has been in communication with us and as always will be doing everything in their power to ensure the safety of all Kearny residents.
We are taking these necessary steps to “err on the side of caution.”

Sincerely,
Robert P. Mooney
Superintendent of Schools
