Van goes into Second River, one body recovered

Photo by Laurence Schraiber of Kearny
BELLEVILLE -A van went over the Rt. 21 guardrail on the Belleville side of the Passaic River into Second River, behind the Cat and Dog Hospital in Kearny around 4 p.m. today, according to Kearny Deputy Chief Robert Osborn. He also said he saw a body being pulled from the vehicle but could not tell whether it was a man or woman.
"There was a lot of action. Everybody was there-Newark, Belleville and Nutley police, UMDNJ rescue unit and Newark ESU," he said.
The wreckage was halfway in the water of the Second River, which is near exit 6.
Traffic is still backed up northbound on Rt. 21. The road is inaccessible between exit 6 and 7, at this time.
More information will be posted as we get it.

Two cars collide into North Arlington building

Photos and story by Diane Tilley
NORTH ARLINGTON – North Arlington Fire Department responded to a two-car collision Monday afternoon, Sept. 9, after an SUV and a Minivan collided at the corner of Harding Street and Morgan Place. Both vehicles jumped the curb with the minivan striking a road sign before crashing into the window of the ground level apartment of Gina Neri, who resides at 55 Morgan Place.
Mrs. Neri, who was home when the accident occurred, said the minivan struck the bedroom window of her nine-year-old son, who was in school at the time. The window’s frame was destroyed. Glass and debris was scattered over her son’s bed and entire room.
“Thank God he was at school. His bed is right under that window,” Mrs. Neri said.
As a long-time resident of the building, Mrs. Neri has witnessed countless accidents at this same corner. “People fly down these streets, we need a four-way stop sign here, I always told my husband some day a car‘s going to come right thru the building, and now look,” she said.
The North Arlington Fire Department extricated the two unidentified drivers, a man and a woman who were transported to Clara Maass Hospital for minor injuries. Firefighters removed the remaining glass and damaged window frames before the windows were boarded up and secured. North Arlington Fire Department Chief Robert Kairys notified Building Inspector Anthony Collito. Collito inspected the building and declared it and the apartment safe for occupation.

Two car crash in Kearny

Photos by James Burns

There was a two-car crash at the intersection of Elm Street and Seeley Avenue in Kearny on Jan.28 at 8:12 Monday morning. A green 2005 Honda Odyssey was heading north on Elm Street when a 2004 silver Mitsubishi traveling east on Stuyvesant Avenue failed to see the stop sign. The Mitsubishi hit the Honda. Upon impact the Honda was propelled into Dollar Sub deli to the northeast. The Mitsubishi barreled onto the sidewalk across the street knocking over a mailbox, according to traffic police reports. Luckily, both drivers’ airbags worked properly and they were taken to University Hospital in Newark with minor injuries.
As for the deli, the Kearny Building Department deemed it structurally sound suffering damage to the windows and interior of the store.
Officer Peter Blair said the four-way stop intersection has had three crashes in the last year. The Town engineer, Mike Neglia, had placed traffic monitors at the area but it did not meet the required amount for the state to put in traffic lights, Blair said. Currently, stop signs with flashing LED are being considered.
“It’s a straight run from Stuyvesant to Elm, and people have a tendency not to realize the stop sign is there,” he said. “It’s a good thing there were no students around, as they come and go at that time, and no pedestrians were hurt.”
