Shuttle service to begin in November

LYNDHURST – The first of six planned shuttle bus routes in the Meadowlands will begin operating on Nov. 5, the New Jersey Meadowlands Commission (NJMC) announced today. The services will create a new mass transit opportunity for hundreds of District workers and residents while reducing pollution and congestion.
Meadowlink Commuter Services was awarded the contract to operate the shuttle service. The company will also be responsible for recruiting businesses to participate in the program. The Lyndhurst shuttle service is expected to attract 150 to 300 riders daily, according to an NJMC transportation analysis. For every 150 new mass transit passengers who use the shuttle, gas consumption will be cut by 10,000 gallons per year. The Lyndhurst loop includes the Meadowlands Corporate Center, the Kingsland Train Station, the Route 3 corridor bus stop at Rutherford and Polito avenues, the AvalonBay apartments and the NJMC.
Service is expected to begin in 2009 on the second shuttle route, which will cover the Secaucus Transit Village including the Xchange at Secaucus residential development. Additional routes are planned in Secaucus, Carlstadt and Moonachie, North Bergen and Kearny.
The shuttle program is part of the NJMC’s District Transportation Plan. The plan, adopted last November, sets a course for transportation infrastructure improvements over the next two decades that will make the 30.4 square-mile Meadowlands District more accessible and environmentally friendly and foster economic growth.
