JERSEY CITY – Scholarship funding is available to qualified students who participate in the Restaurant Operations Program, an exciting new initiative that offers career opportunities in the steadily-growing food services and hospitality industry.
The program, a partnership between the Culinary Arts Institute (CAI) and the Center for Business & Industry (CBI) at Hudson County Community College and the Jersey City Employment & Training Program (JCETP), is open to area residents 18 to 25 years of age who have graduated from high school or hold a GED (General Education Diploma). Classes include NRAEF ServSafe (the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation’s required course), Introduction to Breakfast and Hot Food Preparation, and Introduction to Table Service. Upon successfully completing the program, participants will have earned a Certificate of Completion from the HCCC Culinary Arts Institute, the NRAEF’s ServSafe Certification, and four college credits that may be applied toward an associate degree from the College.
JCETP Internal Monitor/Planner Perry Schwarz said that there is scholarship funding available to participants who meet income eligibility guidelines. The JCETP, which is charged with recruiting participants, and ensuring that they meet the appropriate criteria for admission, is a nonprofit agency mandated by the New Jersey Workforce Investment Act, that assists Jersey City residents in finding the training and services that will lead to employment and careers.
“The great thing is that upon successfully completing this program, participants are not only employment-ready, they are likely better qualified than others seeking jobs in this industry,” said Eric Friedman, the College’s Dean of Community Education who also oversees the operations of the Center for Business & Industry.
The College’s award-winning, nationally recognized Culinary Arts Institute is one of only two programs in the New York region to be accredited by the American Culinary Federation Accrediting Commission. The Culinary Arts Institute now resides in a new 72,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art building on the College’s Journal Square Campus in Jersey City.
The HCCC Center for Business & Industry partners with area business, industry and government organizations to provide customized training and comprehensive educational services that will result in a better-trained workforce for Hudson County. The CBI is also involved in a number of area partnerships and has provided training for food and hospitality industry workers at the new Xanadu Center, and the Customer Service Skills Center, and WomenRising to name a few. Additionally, the CBI has trained employees of Goya Foods, the Hyatt Regency Hotel, Liz Claiborne, Liberty Science Center, and Presidio.
The Restaurant Operations Program is scheduled to begin on Monday, Feb. 9. Those interested in participating are asked to contact JCETP Youth Facilitator Lucy Suarez by phoning 201-217-7141. Slots are filling up quickly! Jersey City Employment & Training is now located at 895 Bergen Avenue in Jersey City.
