HARRISON – During the high winds on Thursday, Feb. 12, the Harrison Fire Department responded to numerous weather-related emergencies that included: trees down or in danger of coming down, wires down, signs down, gazebos tossed from yard to yard, awnings and aluminum siding blowing off and other dangerous objects that were hurled due to winds gusts up to 45 mph. During the windstorm HFD also responded to a local bakery to remove an employee who became entangled in a conveyor-type machine. It took firefighters about 15 minutes to dismantle the machine and remove the employee’s arm. He was transported to University Hospital Trauma Center. Although the 50-year-old man’s hand and arm sustained a significant crush injury, it appeared from the scene that he would recover with full use of the limb, according to Battalion Chief Jim Woods, Tour Three Commander. Woods provided the photos.
