LYNDHURST - The New Jersey Meadowlands Commission (NJMC) announced a new partnership with the Bergen County Audubon Society to bring more nature walks and programs to the Commission’s expanding schedule.
The partnership will offer free 90-minute nature walks at 9 a.m. on the first Sunday and third Tuesday of each month. The programs kick off with a bird walk at DeKorte Park in Lyndhurst on Sunday, July 5.
“This is exactly the kind of partnership that the Meadowlands Commission loves to nurture,” said Robert Ceberio, Executive Director of the NJMC. “We constantly want to expand our programming and make the region’s natural wonders more accessible to the public.”
The Bergen County Audubon Society has been a leading nature group in the region for more than six decades, and the partnership also dovetails nicely with the NJMC’s 40th anniversary, a celebration of the region’s continuing environmental recovery.
“The Meadowlands area is a fantastic natural resource for outdoor activities and is especially valuable given the millions of people living nearby,” said David H. Hall, the Audubon Society’s Director of Field Work. “We look forward to a long and fruitful partnership with the NJMC.”
To coincide with the first walk, the NJMC published a new DeKorte Park trail guide. The guide features an easy-to-use map of the 110-acre park and its 3.5 miles of trails. It also includes information on the Meadowlands Environment Center, the state-of-the-art Center for Environmental and Scientific Education and the William D. McDowell Observatory, all of which are located in DeKorte Park. The guides are available at the Meadowlands Environment Center and the NJMC’s administrative offices.
Upcoming NJMC/BCAS free programs include:
Sunday, July 5: DeKorte Park Walk. 9 a.m. We’ll look for dragonflies and butterflies as well as shorebirds, swallows and herons.
Sunday, July 19: Butterflies for Beginners. 1 p.m. Get started learning how to identify the Butterflies of the Meadowlands and the plants that attract them. Optics for butterflies and how to start your own backyard butterfly garden will be discussed, followed by walk.
Tuesday, July 21: DeKorte Park Walk. 9 a.m. We’ll look for dragonflies and butterflies as well as shorebirds, swallows and herons.
Sunday, Aug. 2: DeKorte Park Walk. 9 a.m. We’ll again look for dragonflies and butterflies as well as shorebirds, swallows and herons.
Tuesday, August 18: Harrier Meadow walk. 1 p.m. We’ll explore the wildlife of this 70-acre wetlands site, usually off-limits to the public.
