KEARNY – I spoke to Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio at around 9:30 a.m. today and he said they were still reviewing various videos from businesses in the area of Rachel Jewelers at 397 Kearny Ave. in order to see what information they can gather about the culprits of the heinous murder of Xavier Egoavil, the son of store owner Honorio Egoavil. The 37-year-old died at the scene of the crime from gunshot wounds on Tuesday morning, a few minutes before 9 a.m. it is believed that two men were in the store and another waiting for them in a vehicle as they ran up Liberty Street
The business has been on Kearny Avenue for almost 40 years. Rachel Egoavil was in the back of the store at the time of the incident.
DeFazio said the alleged getaway car was a green four-door sedan with tinted windows, chrome wheel rims that was described as being dirty. Police officials found the vehicle on Maple Street and “they took off from there.”
The robbers looted two display cases and took a substantial amount of various types of jewelry.
“We don’t have the exact amount but it was of significant value,” DeFazio said.
He said there were three shots fired from a semi-automatic pistol. Members of Hudson County Homicide were at the scene about a half hour after the incident, including Sgt. Appleyard and Diaz, another four detectives from HC homicide. Det. Sgt. Paul Dispoto from Kearny’s BCI unit, Det. Sgt. Robert McGuire and others were also at the scene. Sgt. John Taylor from Traffic and other officers secured the perimeter. Kearny police were on scene within minutes of the shooting.
As far as the suspects go, DeFazio said, “They were clearly adult (Caucasian and olive-skinned) male(s), early 20s, 30s. The precise age we don’t have. We do have witnesses who have given descriptions of the individuals.”
While the investigation is “very active,” the suspects have not yet been apprehended. Anyone with information of any kind about the incident should contact the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office homicide unit at 201-915-1345.
“People might have seen something that they didn’t think was significant but it may be important. If something is factual, we want to hear it, even if it’s anonymous,” he said. “We’re hopeful that we’re going to develop the identity of these three – we believe there was a driver.”
That two of the suspects were casing the jewelry stores has not been substantiated in any way at this time.
