LYNDHURST –The New Jersey Meadowlands Commission (NJMC) will hold public hearings during the next two months to solicit input on future land use options for the Meadowlands Redevelopment Area. The first session is Monday, Sept. 14 at 7 p.m. at Rutherford Borough Hall. A second hearing is set for Thursday, Oct. 8 at 7 p.m. at Lyndhurst Town Hall.
“It is extremely important that the public have a say in the future of this critical part of the Meadowlands,” said Robert Ceberio, Executive Director of the NJMC. “We look forward to hearing residents’ ideas as we move forward in planning what makes the most sense for the environment and the local economy.”
The Meadowlands Redevelopment Area consists of four former landfills covering 785 acres in parts of Rutherford, Lyndhurst and North Arlington. The landfills are in the process of being properly closed and secured by the American Home Assurance insurance company. The area had been slated for luxury housing, golf courses and other upscale development by the area’s former redeveloper, EnCap Golf Holdings.
At Governor Corzine’s recommendation, the NJMC announced in April that it would reexamine land use options for the site, taking into consideration environmental and economic considerations and ensuring that the process involve local officials and public participation. The Commission is also forming a working group to examine land use options for the area that will include the mayors of Lyndhurst, Rutherford and North Arlington and other municipal officials.
Rutherford Borough Hall is at 176 Park Avenue and Lyndhurst Town Hall is at 367 Valleybrook Avenue.
