Kearny police reports

From the desk of Chief John Dowie

KEARNY – A 48-year-old New York man was arrested by Sgt. Charles Smith and Officer Steve Hroncich when he was found in possession of more than 300 “pirated” or counterfeits DVDs and CDs in the area of Kearny Avenue and Afton Street where he was attempting to sell them. He was charged with selling pirated recordings under a criminal complaint and was issued a two-town ordinance summons for peddling violations. His videos and CDs were held for evidence.
A Pennsylvania resident drew the attention of Officer Louis Moran and Sgt. Mike Cordella on Stevenson Place. He had five outstanding warrants from three different jurisdictions and was placed under arrest and held for bail totaling more than $1,000.
Officers Mike Andrews and Al Kuhn saw a Perth Amboy man pumping Kearny water from a fire hydrant in South Kearny into his own tanker truck and issued him a town summons.
Officer Mike Gonzalez saw a 44-year-old Kearny man in the area of 100 Devon Street that he was aware had an outstanding Newark warrant and took him into custody. He was processed and held for $250 bail.
Officers Sumowski and Andrews arrested a Newark woman on an outstanding East Newark warrant after seeing her slumped over the steering wheel of her car in an illegal parking space after midnight in the area of Kearny Avenue and Halstead Street.
Chief Dowie saw a man urinating in public against a parked vehicle on Kearny Avenue by Roosevelt School and issued him a town summons. The parked vehicle was not his.
Officer Mike Andrews saw a man drinking beer in public at Kearny and Bergen Avenues and gave false information as to his identity. He was apparently trying to conceal the fact that he had numerous warrants. Det. Ray Lopez assisted in confirming the true identity and making the arrest.
A 52-year-old Kearny man was arrested for driving while intoxicated for the second time in as many weeks after Officers Derek Hemphill and John Fabula saw him driving erratically in the area of Kearny Avenue and Halstead Street. The suspect also failed a field sobriety test that was administered. His loud, obnoxious and belligerent woman passenger was issued a town summons for drinking in public when she had the poor judgment to get out of the stopped vehicle and drink beer in front of the arresting officers.
Officers Mike Andrews and Tom Floyd arrested a 23-year-old Jersey City man for DWI after he crashed his vehicle into a concrete road support on Rt. 7 in South Kearny and was seen staggering around the scene by the officers as well as emitting a strong odor of alcohol. The man admitted he had been drinking Tequila and was placed under arrest and transported to University Hospital by ambulance for treatment and to have blood taken as evidence for the DWI offense.
