NORTH ARLINGTON – On Saturday Oct. 18 at 10:50 a.m. on Shields Place off of Arlington Boulevard a call was placed to headquarters on Ridge Road by an elderly resident who was a victim of an Internet scam. The woman said that she allegedly found a job on the Internet that involved evaluating two money-wiring services – Western Union out of Belleville and Money Gram out of Metro Liquors out of North Arlington. The victim said that her alleged boss on the Internet told her he would send her a check to use for the wire transfers in order to test the two services. Shortly thereafter, she received a check for $2950 to be used for the transfers. The victim was told through e-mail that she could keep $450 as payment for her services. After she deposited the check into her account, she made two wire transactions for $998 to a person in Kentucky and another for $1425 to someone in Georgia. After making the transactions, her bank contacted her to say that the check was “no good.” The victim had just sent out almost $2500 of her own money.
Chief Hearn said these type of scams happen all the time to people who do not check the validity of the companies or persons they transact with over the Internet. With this type of scam, he said, “There is almost no way of tracking this down.” The case is still under investigation.
Between Oct. 18 at 10:30 p.m. and Oct. 19 at 12:31 p.m. on Fairmount Avenue there was a criminal mischief to motor vehicle. The victim parked his 2004 Ford F150 pick-up truck at around 10:30 that Saturday and during the night someone tried to break into his truck by popping the drivers side door lock. Fortunately the thief was unsuccessful at getting into the vehicle but the door lock was damaged nevertheless.
On Sunday, Oct. 19 at 6:36 p.m. on Schuyler Avenue at the Belleville Turnpike intersection Kearny resident George Sanchez, 28, was arrested and charged for driving while intoxicated. Police received a 9-1-1 call from a motorist who said a white Mitsubishi directly in front of his vehicle was obstructing the roadway with a driver slumped over his steering wheel, apparently sleeping with his foot on the brake and the vehicle still in drive mode and running. Officers responded to the scene and after multiple attempts of banging on the window were not able to awaken the driver. One of the officers had to break the passenger side window to get into the car to put it into park. The driver did not wake up during this event either.
As the officers turned off the ignition, they could smell the strong odor of alcohol from the driver and shortly thereafter finally woke up Sanchez and asked him to perform field sobriety tests we he could not pass accurately or complete. Police issued him two summons – one for careless driving and another for DWI. The Mitsubishi was impounded, Sanchez was processed and released to a responsible party.

There was approximately $7500 in cash missing along with 88 packs of cigarettes (valued at $575.) The investigation is ongoing.
On Oct. 21 at 1:51 a.m. on Schuyler Avenue at Renner Place Kearny resident Sunita Badger, 27, was issued four motor vehicle summons, and a criminal compliant for providing false information to law enforcement.
While on patrol an officer saw a Ford Explorer speeding as well as going through a stop sign. After pulling Badger over, she couldn’t produce identification. She gave her name as Sunita Suggs but during his search the officer could not find a name in the database but he did find a person under her real name and she had a suspended drivers license and an active criminal warrant for her arrest out of Millville in the amount of $641. Badger was processed and released on a summons on the North Arlington charges after posting full cash bail on the warrant.
