LHS Spanish teacher wins scholarship to travel

LYNDHURST – Mr. Hamlet Marte, a Spanish teacher in Lyndhurst High School, recently learned that he was selected for a Scholarship for Teacher Study Abroad in Spain from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, provided by NSE, the National Spanish Examinations, a division of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese (AATSP).
Two $3,500 scholarships were open to all AATS members from across the country, and it was reported that a large amount of qualified applicants applied. Marte was one of two applicants chosen for the scholarship to Spain.
The opportunity for teachers to study abroad enables continued professional development in an effort to develop curriculum, design instruction and create assessments from first hand experiences with Spanish language and culture. Marte will spend four weeks in Spain over the summer of 2009. “I am truly honored to represent Lyndhurst High School in my studies abroad,” Marte said. “I know the time spent in Spain will provide me with an exceptional learning experience – one that will reward me both professionally and personally.” He will be taking courses from Universidad Complutense de Madrid and be responsible to document his experiences through an on-line blog and digital photographs. These experiences will be invaluable to his students, colleagues and other AATSP / NSE members.
The Universidad Complutense de Madrid, with over 200,000 students, is a cultural center which offers the American student excellent educational opportunity for intellectual and artistic development. It combines a unique academic experience with an unusual community of students and teachers from all over the world.
