NJ property tax reimbursement progam

Assisting senior citizens and disabled residents in completing the New Jersey Property Tax Reimbursement Program (Senior Freeze)

Staff from the Kearny Tax Collector's will be available on Monday, March 30th, at the times noted below, to assist senior citizens and disabled residents in completing the New Jersey Property Tax Reimbursement Program (Senior Freeze) form PTR-1 and PTR-2 by verifying the amount of taxes paid.
Where: Kearny Town Hall, 402 Kearny Avenue, Tax Collector’s Office
When: March 30, 10 – 11:30 AM and 1 to 3 PM
The deadline for filing 2008 reimbursement applications is June 1, 2009.
The PTR Program, now in its eleventh year, reimburses qualified applicants for the property tax increases they incur each year. The amount of the reimbursement is the difference between the property taxes due and paid in the applicant’s “base year” and the property taxes for the current year. Applicants must continue to meet all the income eligibility and residency requirements and must file an application each year to receive the reimbursement.
This year more senior and disabled New Jersey residents than ever before will be able to qualify for reimbursements because of recent legislation that increased the income limits for the program. Residents applying for the 2008 reimbursement must have total income for 2007 that was $60,000 or less and total income for 2008 of $70,000 or less. These limits apply for all applicants, regardless of marital/civil union status. However, applicants who are married or in a civil union must report combined income of both spouses/civil union partners.
There are two versions of the property tax reimbursement application. Form PTR-1 is for applicants who are filing an application for the first time (or who filed an application last year that was not approved for payment). Form PTR-1 applicants must provide income and property tax information for both 2007 and 2008. Form PTR-2 is a personalized application sent to those who received reimbursement checks for 2007 and contains some of the information provided on the resident’s base year application.
Additionally, certain senior and disabled residents have an opportunity to file 2007 reimbursement applications during a limited period that ends March 31, 2009. These are residents who now qualify for a 2007 reimbursement solely because of the increase in the income limit for 2007 to $60,000 or less. (They met all the other 2007 PTR eligibility requirements except that their income was too high.)
